Gardeners Cheam Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Cheam is committed to providing professional gardening services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, subcontractors, clients and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures that guide our work on every site where we operate.
Policy Aims and Responsibilities
The aim of this policy is to prevent accidents, injuries and ill health arising from our gardening activities. We will, so far as is reasonably practicable, identify hazards, control risks and promote safe working practices in all aspects of garden maintenance, landscaping and related services.
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who ensure that suitable resources are provided to implement and maintain this policy. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day to day adherence to safety procedures on site. Every employee and subcontractor has a duty to take reasonable care for their own safety and the safety of others who may be affected by their actions.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before commencing work at any property, we consider the specific conditions of the garden, including access routes, surfaces, slopes, vegetation, nearby structures and the presence of other people or pets. Where required, formal risk assessments are carried out to identify potential hazards and to determine appropriate control measures.
Safe systems of work are established for tasks such as mowing, hedge cutting, pruning, use of powered equipment, application of treatments, waste removal and working at height. These systems are communicated to all relevant team members, who are expected to follow them at all times.
Training, Supervision and Competence
We recognise that proper training is essential to maintain high standards of health and safety in gardening and grounds maintenance. All staff receive appropriate instruction in the safe use of tools and machinery, manual handling techniques, use of personal protective equipment and hazard awareness.
New employees are given an induction that covers our health and safety arrangements and site specific requirements. Ongoing supervision is provided to ensure that safe methods of work are followed and to identify any need for additional training or refresher sessions.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment is provided where necessary to protect workers from identified risks. This may include, but is not limited to, safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing and respiratory protection.
Employees are required to use the personal protective equipment supplied, to look after it with care and to report any damage or defects immediately so that replacements can be arranged.
Tools, Machinery and Equipment Safety
All gardening tools, machinery and equipment used by Gardeners Cheam must be suitable for the task, properly maintained and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidelines. Equipment is inspected regularly and any item that is damaged or faulty is taken out of use until repaired or replaced.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered equipment such as lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, blowers and similar machinery. Guards and safety devices must never be removed or bypassed.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Considerations
When using garden treatments, fertilisers or any other substances, we aim to select products that are appropriate, effective and as safe as reasonably practicable. All such products are stored, handled, mixed and applied in line with the instructions on the label and relevant safety data information.
We take care to protect people, pets, wildlife and planting when applying treatments, including observing exclusion times and advising clients where areas should be avoided after application. Any spills are dealt with promptly and disposed of safely.
Manual Handling and Physical Work
Gardening work frequently involves lifting, carrying and moving materials, plants and equipment. To reduce the risk of injury, staff are instructed in safe manual handling methods and are encouraged to make use of mechanical aids or team lifting techniques whenever appropriate.
Work is planned to avoid excessive strain, and frequent short breaks may be taken as needed during physically demanding tasks or in challenging weather conditions.
Working at Height
Where gardening tasks require work at height, such as tree pruning or hedge cutting above ground level, suitable equipment and methods are used. Ladders and platforms are inspected regularly and set up on firm, level ground. Workers are trained in safe use before carrying out such tasks.
We avoid overreaching, unstable positioning and any practice that could create a risk of falls. Work at height is only undertaken where it is considered safe to do so with the equipment and skills available.
Protection of Clients, Visitors and the Public
Gardeners Cheam recognises its responsibility to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and the general public from risks arising out of our activities. We plan our work to minimise disruption and to prevent unauthorised access to hazardous areas, especially when using machinery or handling materials.
Tools and equipment are not left unattended in a way that could pose a danger, and pathways and access routes are kept as clear as reasonably possible during and after work. Any issues that may affect the safety of clients, such as unstable structures or hazardous trees, are brought to their attention.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses, injuries and hazardous situations must be reported to management as soon as possible, whether they involve staff, clients or members of the public. We review such incidents to identify causes and to implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
Staff are made aware of basic emergency procedures, including how to respond to injuries, fires, sudden illness or contact with harmful substances. First aid supplies are available to teams working on site, and emergency services are contacted when necessary.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
Gardeners Cheam is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance. This policy is reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, working practices or relevant legislation.
We welcome feedback from employees and clients regarding health and safety matters and use this information, along with incident reports and site observations, to refine our procedures and strengthen our safety culture.
By following this Health and Safety Policy, Gardeners Cheam aims to deliver high quality gardening services while maintaining a safe environment for everyone involved with or affected by our work.
